The history of massage dates back thousands of years and is recognised for its many therapeutic benefits. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and through touch we can experience healing. 

Massage has been proven to be beneficial for

  • reducing muscular and chronic pain
  • increasing circulation
  • releasing tension
  • aid healing
  • reducing edema
  • alleviating insomnia
  • improving wellbeing
  • instilling calmness
  • and a sense of belonging. 

 

Geriatric massage or senior massage adopts the principles of Swedish (relaxation) massage however, techniques are adjusted to accomodate for ageing skin, poor sensation and chronic illnesses such as arthritis. Older people are at risk of experiencing loneliness and isolation. Through massage, touch can soothe and promote companionship. Touch is the primary language of compassion (D. Kelner Ph.D). 

Furthermore, tactile therapies such as massage can assist people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease experience less agitation, improved mood and mental clarity. 

Massage can be performed in your own home or residential facility, in the comfort of your chair or on your bed. The benefits of massage do not require you to be undressed, as compression movements can be performed over clothing. Legs, feet, arms, hands, back, head and/or shoulders are commonly massaged with lotion or cold pressed oil. Essential oils can also enhance the relaxing experience.

Kerryn is CIDESCO qualified in Swedish massage and has additional training in Geriatric massage. Feet, hand and light massages are available.

Massage is a complimentary therapy that restores the mind and body connection.
